Ethics

Evidence for approval by a local ethics committee (for both human as well as animal studies) must be supplied by the authors on demand.

For all biomedical research involving human subjects, the following regulations must be observed:

For authors from China:

  • “Measures for the Ethical Review of Biomedical Research Involving Human Subjects”《涉及人的生物医学研究伦理审查办法》

  • “Measures for the Ethical Review of Life Sciences and Medical Research Involving Human Subjects”《涉及人的生命科学和医学研究伦理审查办法》

  • “Laboratory animals-General code of animal welfare”《实验动物—福利通则》(GB/T 42011-2022)

For authors from abroad:

  • “The Declaration of Helsinki of the World Medical Association: Ethical Principles for Medical Research Involving Human Subjects”, revised in 2013.

  • The Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS), “International Ethical Guidelines for Health-related Research Involving Humans”, 2016 Edition.

If the research does not involve ethical review, it also needs to be stated at the end of the article.

Language

Please write your text in good English.

• Write the full term for each abbreviation at its first use in the title, abstract, keywords and text separately unless it is a standard unit of measure.

• Numerals at the beginning of the sentence spelt out;

• Check the manuscript for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors;

• If a brand or software name is cited, supply the manufacturer’s name and address (city and state/country);

•Species names should be in italics (generally gene names should be described in italics and protein names in normal font).

• Statistical symbols should be in italics, such as P, n, etc.

Abstract and Keywords

Abstract:

Provide an abstract of not more than 250 words with four labeled paragraphs containing the following:

  • Objective: Problem being addressed in the study

  • Methods: How the study was performed

  • Results: Salient results

  • Conclusion: What the authors conclude from study results

References should be avoided, but if essential, then cite the author(s) and year(s). Also, non-standard or uncommon abbreviations should be avoided, but if essential they must be defined at their first mention in the abstract itself.

Keywords:

Please provide three to eight keywords in the main content of the article.

Figure and Table

Figures should be created in (not pasted into) Adobe Illustrator, PowerPoint, Excel or (in the case of maps) other text editable vector format files (such as .ai, .eps, and .wmf). Bar graphs or line graphs should have underlying data tables. Figures should be provided in the main text. If the graphs are too large, they should be sent in separate files. Submit good quality color images. Patients’ privacy maintained (if not permission taken). Credit note for borrowed figures/tables provided. Write the full term for each abbreviation used in the table as a footnote.

References (examples)

Authors are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of their references and for correct citation of the text. References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text (not in name alphabetic order). Identify references in text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals in superscript after the punctuation marks. References cited only in tables or figure legends should be numbered in accordance with the sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or figure.

When listing references, abbreviate titles of journals according to Medline. List authors and/or editors up to 3; if more than 3, list the first 3 authors followed by et al. The available Digital Object Identifier (DOI) should be added at the end of every reference. If the reference is not in English, please indicate the original language, for example, Zhang DZ, Liu CT, Wan YH, et al. Pertussis antibody level in serum among the 605 healthy population from high-prevalence area, Guizhou. Mod Prev Med, 2018; 45, 164−8. (In Chinese)

Examples of journal citations: Zheng CY, Wu JM, Tang HS, et al. Relationship of ambienthumidity with cardiovascular diseases: A prospective study of 24,510 adults in a general population. Biomed Environ Sci, 2024; 37, 1352−61.

Example of Electronic Sources citation: European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Publications and data. Pertussis-annual epidemiological report. https://www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/publications-data/pertussis-annual-epidemiological-report-2017. [2022-08-12].

Example of book citation: Murray PR, Rosenthal KS, Kobayashi GS, et al. Medical microbiology. 4th ed. St. Louis: Mosby; 2002.

Supplementary materials

Supplementary material such as applications, images and sound clips, can be published with your article to enhance it. Submitted supplementary items are published exactly as they are received (Excel or PowerPoint files will appear as such online). Please submit your material together with the article and supply a concise, descriptive caption for each supplementary file. If you wish to make changes to supplementary material during any stage of the process, please make sure to provide an updated file. Do not annotate any corrections on a previous version. Please switch off the 'Track Changes' option in Microsoft Office files as these will appear in the published version.

Supplementary material is not typeset, so please ensure that all information is clearly presented without tracked changes/highlighted text/line numbers. To avoid discrepancies between the published article and the supplementary material, please do not add the title, author list, affiliations or correspondence in the supplementary files.

Retraction policy

BES should consider retracting a publication if:

1.  Editors have clear evidence that the findings are unreliable, either as a result of misconduct (e.g., data fabrication) or honest error (e.g., miscalculation or experimental error).

2.  The findings have previously been published elsewhere without proper crossreferencing, permission or justification (i.e., cases of redundant publication).

3.  It constitutes plagiarism.

4.  It reports unethical research.

BES abides by Retraction Guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Proofreading

Manuscripts accepted for publication are copy edited for grammar, punctuation, print style, and format. Page proofs are sent to the corresponding author. The corresponding author is expected to return the corrected proofs within seven days. It may not be possible to incorporate corrections received after that period. The whole process of submission of the manuscript to final decision and sending and receiving proofs is completed online. To achieve faster and greater dissemination of knowledge and information, the journal publishes articles online as “Online First” soon after acceptance.

Article processing charge

Authors have to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) if the article is accepted for publication

Authors from China: CNY 700 per page (the number of pages is calculated based on the final PDF version), an additional CNY 1200 will be charged if figures need to be printed in color.

Authors outside China: USD 150 per print page including the cost of all figures (the number of pages is calculated based on the final PDF version).

Submission declaration and verification

Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract, a published lecture or academic thesis), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out, and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, including electronically without the written consent of the copyright-holder.

All manuscripts must contain the following sections at the end of your article in sequence:

• Funding

• Competing interests

• Ethics

• Authors’ contributions (Contributions come first, and names come second. The format of the names should be consistent with that of the authors’ names under the article title.)

• Acknowledgements

• Data sharing

Funding

All sources of funding for the research reported should be declared. The role of the funding body in the design of the study and collection, analysis, and interpretation of data and in writing the manuscript should be declare.

You are requested to identify who provided financial support for the conduct of the research and/or preparation of the article and to briefly describe the role of the sponsor(s), if any, in study design; in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data; in the writing of the report; and in the decision to submit the article for publication. If the funding source(s) had no such involvement, it is recommended to state this.

Competing interests

All authors must disclose any and all conflicts of interest, they may have with publication of the manuscript or an institution or product that is mentioned in the manuscript and/or is important to the outcome of the study presented. Authors should also disclose conflicts of interest with products that compete with those mentioned in their manuscript. A conflict of interest may exist when an author (or the author’s institution or employer) has financial or personal relationships or affiliations that could influence (or bias) the author’s decisions, work, or manuscript.

All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work.

All financial and non-financial competing interests must be declared in this section.

If there are no conflicts of interest, authors should state that none exist.

Authors’ contributions

Authors should have made substantial contributions to the conception and design of the study, or acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data; drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content; final approval of the version to be submitted; agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the article are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Participation solely in the acquisition of funding or the collection of data does not justify authorship. General supervision of the research group is not sufficient for authorship. Each contributor should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for appropriate portions of the content of the manuscript. The order of naming the contributors should be based on the relative contribution of the contributor towards the study and writing the manuscript. Once submitted the order cannot be changed without written consent of all the contributors. Manuscripts must be submitted by one of the authors of the manuscript, and should not be submitted by anyone on their behalf. The corresponding author takes responsibility for the article during submission and peer review.

Authors should determine the order of authorship among themselves and should settle any disagreements before submitting their manuscript. Changes in authorship (i.e., order, addition, and deletion of authors) should be discussed and approved by all authors. Any requests for such changes in authorship after initial manuscript submission and before publication should be explained in writing to the editor in a letter or email from all authors and should send the original signed written consent of all authors with authorized unit stamp. The format of the authors’ names should be consist with the names under the title of the main text.

Acknowledgements

Please acknowledge anyone who contributed towards the article who does not meet the criteria for authorship, including anyone who provided professional writing services or materials. Authors should obtain permission to acknowledge from all those mentioned in this section.

Data sharing (available)

We encourage authors to include a data sharing statement at the end of every research manuscript when submitting their article, in order to follow the requirement of International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) about data sharing for clinical trials.

Data sharing statements must indicate the following: whether individual identified participant data (including data dictionaries) will be shared; what data in particular will be shared; whether additional, related documents will be available (study protocol, statistical analysis plan, etc.); when the data will become available and for how long; by what access criteria data will be shared (including with whom, for what types of analyses, and by what mechanism).

If no such further data are available, please use this wording: “Data sharing: no additional data available.”
